Desert Vipers has committed to lowering our carbon footprint by 50% by 2030 (versus Season 1 in 2023), and by Season 3, we had managed to achieve a reduction of 19.5%.
However, there is still plenty of work to do to achieve our ambitious target, so in Season 4 we have continued to work towards lowering our carbon footprint.
In Season 4, as well as thinking about the different areas of emissions – Hotel, Travel, Stadium, Kit, and Other – as in previous seasons, we have also started to think about areas of overlap and changes we can make that apply to all areas, in our quest to achieve greater emissions reductions.
One area that stood out was fuel consumption, as across Season 3, direct fuel consumption (diesel and petrol) accounted for 272.7 tCO2e – almost 37% of total emissions. This is broken down into: 172.8 tCO2e for Team Travel (Flights); 48.2 tCO2e for Fan Travel; 7.8 tCO2e for Team Travel (Cars); 5.1 tCO2e for Team Travel (Bus); 35.8 tCO2e for Generators (Hotel); and 2.9 tCO2e for Generators & Pitch Machinery (Stadium). This does not include petrol and diesel used to power the electricity grid nor any of the products in the supply chain.
In order to address emissions associated with fuel consumption, we partnered with Fuelre4m in Season 4, who have a fuel reformer product – Re4mx – which helps fuel last longer, reducing consumption by approximately 15-20%, and, in turn, significantly lowering emissions. We worked with Fuelre4m across the season to use Re4mx in as many places as possible where Desert Vipers uses petrol and diesel, with the results shown below.
Team Cars

- Season 3: Emissions of 7.8 tCO2e for Team Travel (Cars).
- Season 4: Added Re4mx to our GWM Tank 300 hybrid cars after the Group Stage to reduce emissions.
- Predicted Results: A 15% fuel consumption decrease will result in an estimated 1.1 tCO2e saving.
Team Bus

- Season 3: Emissions of 5.1 tCO2e for Team Travel (Bus).
- Season 4: Trialled using Re4mx in our Team Bus as part of an introduction to our bus supplier.
Results: 37% fuel consumption decrease in trials for a similar bus, resulting in estimated 1.9 tCO2e saving for Desert Vipers.
Stadium Pitch Machinery

- Season 3: 2.9 tCO2e for Generators & Pitch Machinery (Stadium).
- Season 4: Introduced during Sustainability Match, with trials taking place in pitch machinery after.
Predicted Results: 15% fuel consumption decrease will result in an estimated 0.4 tCO2e saving if added permanently to generators and pitch machinery.
Where Next?
Generators at our Team Hotel is another area where Fuelre4m can help to reduce emissions, with potential larger savings of 5.4 tCO2e for Desert Vipers.
However, the greater opportunity in emissions savings will come through the ripple effects of showing what’s possible. We also hope that by running these successful trials, we inspire those in our wider community to take action, unlocking bigger carbon reduction opportunities from Team Travel (Flights) and Fan Travel, and create efficiency gains from others in our supply chain and the sports ecosystem.
